DON McLEAN AMERICAN PIE CONTEST
This month of October marks the 31st anniversary of the release of Don McLean’s classic American Pie recording. Capitol Records recently commemorated the anniversary by re-releasing the album in CD and cassette for with two songs originally left off the record back in 1971 and expanded liner notes.
Following the release of the single “American Pie” in the summer of 1971, a virtual cottage industry sprung up with people trying to figure out just what the song was about. Cryptic lyrical passages seemed to conjure up images of pop culture, history and famous people, with the author Don McLean only acknowledging that the song was inspired by his lasting interest in Buddy Holly. Even now more than three decades later, there are numerous websites dedicated to the meaning behind one of the classic American pop songs of all time.
What’s your take on “American Pie?” In 2500 words or less, tell us what you think the song is really about. Be as creative as you like. You may try to decipher the lyrics line-by-line (be original, please), perhaps describe how the meaning of the song has changed with time, or you can simply try to describe what the song means to you. americanpie.com site producer Alan Howard and Forum Moderators Karman Moore, Ron Buck and Jim Monaghan will act as judges.
