Welcome back to the news blog

Here is the resurrected news blog that was a feature of the website between 2001 and 2008. Some stories from the 2008-09 version of the site have been inserted but we have yet to copy comments across. The news blog has some interesting stuff in it, mainly news direct from Don McLean about upcoming events, some of which happened, some of which didn't.

As we look forward to 2010, we see a busy year of international touring ahead for Don. On the concerts page you will find many confirmed dates for his Europe and UK tour in April and May. There are other dates in the pipeline and a possible big surprise for late 2010.

Don McLean will be the subject of two new TV shows in 2010. Japanese TV spent three hours interviewing Don at a recent American concert and we will have details of the availability of the resulting show soon.

In the New Year, Don will be recording a special for Songbook Series IV, sponsored by PRS, in association with the Songwriters' Hall of Fame.

12 months ago we published a 33 page interview featuring questions posed by fans and Don's revealing and personal responses. This is well worth another read as Christmas approaches.

    Early recording of American Pie

Here is an early recording of Don McLean singing “American Pie” unearthed from the archives of WMUC radio, a student run station at the University of Maryland.

The station believes the recording originates from spring 1971, well before the song was released for sale as a single. There are some differences between this WMUC recording and the lyrics and music as we know them from the record.

Don McLean has listened to the recording but doesn’t recall anything about it except to say that, in general, he did “play with the lyrics, just for fun sometimes.”

    Listent to the recording here:
